Soul & Soil Rainbow Gardens CSA

Meet Beverly Pender - A Kansas City Urban Farmer

I started out learning about planting and growing vegetation as a young woman with a love of beautiful things.  Wanting to beautify the exterior of my home with color, I began experimenting by planting flowers in follower beds and pots around my home.  I became fascinated with nature’s growing processes.

     My
interest in gardening grew as more and more I tired of buying grocery store produce that required multiple washings to clear away the pesticides.  I headed off to the library to learn how to start a vegetable garden.  As my interest expanded, so did my learning about gardening.  Soon family, friends, neighbors and the elderly were enjoying the fruits of my labor which now included canned vegetables and homemade jams and jellies.

Then, I had to relinquish my love of gardening when tragedy struck.  Coming out of a coma after my illness, it was a long recovery process.  It was during my recovery period while sitting outside looking out over my garden that I saw three rainbows appear over her gardens.  I prayed to God; I vowed to do gardening full time and bless others if He healed my body.
God's favor was upon me; my body healed and my gift for gardening grew.

It has been over 15 years since my recovery and I have dedicated my life to learning all I can about organic gardening and agriculture.  I’ve been featured in the Kansas City Star’s food sections regularly, have served as Vice-President of the KCCUA and was a recipient of a  2008 SARE award.  In the last 4-5 years I have taken on new learning experiences which include the growing ofheirloom fruit and vegetables.  I also provide organically raised free range chickens and eggs.
